We’re pretty flexible when it comes to our funding guidelines but we like to prioritise certain types of organisations. Our focus is environmental/ conservation charities, animal welfare and humanitarian projects, but also we look for small organisations (the smaller the better!) and those who find it hard to raise money due to the particular issue they are working on.
The little ones!
We like to track down the small, grassroots charities who have really tiny annual incomes or are perhaps completely voluntary run. Larger organisations often have a team of fundraisers working to raise money for them, the smaller ones are often run by just a few people trying to do everything. For these organisations, a little goes a long way!
Organisations working on issues which are hard to raise funds for.
There are certain causes that find it much easier to find funding than others. For example, health charities such as medical research, hospices and hospitals receive around 27% of all donations in the UK. Religious charities receive around 18% and children and young people’s charities receive around 13%. These types of organisations are not a priority for us.
Did you know?
Did you know that just 18 charities generate 1/8 of the charity sector’s income? That over 70% of the total income raised by all the 165,000+ charities in the UK is generated by under 3,500 organisations (just 2% of the sector)? Or that 86.8% of charitable organisations have incomes of less than £100,000, but generate less than 7% of all charities’ income? (NCVO Voluntary Sector Almanac 2007). So, basically, a few big organisations are receiving the bulk of the income.
Whilst we appreciate the brilliant work of all the hard working charities and other good causes in the UK, we want to help those who struggle most; so for us, it’s the little ones and the ones who work on the issues which are hard to raise funds for. If you know any, please email me on charitypot@lush.co.uk. Thank you!
I have just been sent a link to this website and am so pleased that an ethical company truly values and realises whats happening in the world of welfare.
We are a small rescue group – and hear so many times that people send their money to the big guys – but where does that money go to? Its great to think you are helping the little ones that do so much.
I hope we can work together, and I can point other grass root welfare projects towards you too.
