Animals

We’ve given about 16% of the Charity Pot funds so far to to animal protection organisations, such as rescue centres and animal rights groups. Many of the projects under environment/ conservation also help animals, so if you’re a fan of four-legged or feathered friends, make sure you check that out!

Veggies (2009)
Veggies is a volunteer-led catering campaign that has catered for and supported a huge range of groups campaigning for animal and human rights and social justice since 1984. Besides touring the country, catering at actions, demonstrations, festivals, fairs and meetings, Veggies play a vital role in the running of the Nottingham’s Sumac Centre (a resource centre for social justice activists), publishing the Animal Contacts Directory and compiling the UK’s Animal Rights Calendar.

fox-project* Fox Project * (2009)
This charity is dedicated to the red fox. They operate in parts of Kent, Surrey, East Sussex and South East London, dealing with sick and injured foxes and abandoned fox cubs and working with a large team of volunteers to provide for their care, treatment and rehabilitation back into the wild.

huntsabs* Hunt Sabateurs Association * (2008 & 2009)
Hunting with hounds was supposed to have been banned in England & Wales in February 2005, and in Scotland, several years earlier. However, now the fuss and media attention has died down, most hunts are carrying on as they did before. HSA works to stop the hunts.

Animal SOS Sri Lanka (2009)
This small UK registered charity was founded to to alleviate animal suffering in Sri Lanka, drastically raise standards in animal welfare and veterinary care, and to leave in place a legacy for their future. Working with UK and Sri Lankan partnerships and support, they aim to give additional quality of life to both humans and animals in Sri Lanka.

* Knoxwood Wildlife Rescue (2009) *
This wildlife rescue centre in Cumbria rescues, rehabilitates and releases all kinds of wild animals, unusual ones such as seals and ospreys but also the more common animals like pigeons and foxes. They also look after exotic animals that have been kept as pets.

apa-logo* Animal Protection Agency (2008 & 2009)*
APA is committed to ceasing the trade in wildlife for pets. A large part of their work is to lobby for improved legislation to protect animal welfare. They oppose the activities of individuals or companies involved in the trade in wild animals as pets and expose the wasteful practices and consequences of the wildlife trade.

celia-hammond-logoCelia Hammond Animal Trust (2008)
This charity provides care and refuge for feral cats and kittens and for those animals which on the basis of age, temperament or appearance would not normally be taken in elsewhere. Their work includes the promotion animal welfare through example and education, providing low cost treatment and neuter/vaccination clinics. We gave them a donation in memory of a dear Lush customer who had a great love of cats.

arafrica* Animal Rights Africa * (2008)
ARA is the only broad-based animal rights organisation on the African continent. They campaign on issues such as whaling, elephant cull, animal testing, hunting (including canned hunting), poaching and ethical conservation.

caft* Coalition to Abolish the Fur Trade *(2008)
Formed in 1997, CAFT-UK has helped regenerate the grass-roots campaign against the fur trade in Britain. Through investigations, education, campaigns and demonstrations they have helped to expose the horror of the fur trade and establish and continue anti-fur actions across Britain.

capsCaptive Animals Protection Society (CAPS) (2007)
CAPS is opposed to the use of animals in entertainment and works to end their use. Their main objective is to end the use of all animals in circuses and other key areas of their work are to end the captivity of animals in zoos and exotic pet trade as well as the use of captive wild animals in advertising and films.

people-for-animalsPeople for Animals (2007)
This all-volunteer, not-for-profit animal protection organisation is dedicated to preventing intentional or unintentional harm to all animals in our community with a focus on dogs and cats. Founded in 1986, their goal is to enhance pet quality of life and reduce the number of healthy pets euthanised in shelters.
