Campaign Against the Levels Motorway (CALM)

We received some great news in July 2009 about the campaign to stop the levels motorway which threatened to destroy the local environment. Rebecca from Campaign for Better Transport gave us this update:-

The M4 through the Gwent Levels in Wales was abandoned by the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) after a sustained and well organised campaign against it by the CALM alliance. This would have wrecked the Gwent Levels and the habitats of water voles, otters and breeding waders – lapwing, snipe, redshank and curlew.  The road has been abandoned in the draft Welsh transport strategy that is out for consultation (so there is a danger that it could be reinserted – although this is unlikely). CALM’s suggestions for traffic reduction and demand management, and better public transport have been taken on board by WAG instead.

This campaign has been going for over 15 years, but all the campaigning has finally paid off!

Thanks so much for all your support for these, and all the other campaigns.
