David Gate, Transport Solutions for Lancaster & Morecambe, gave this update:-
Lush Charity Pot kindly donated funds to TSLM in 2007, to help fight the Public Inquiry into the Heysham M6 Link. We used experts and legal representation to press home ourarguments that the road would not solve congestion in the area, nor bring the jobs that were claimed. Instead, it would destroy 173 acres of our North Lancashire Green Belt, bring an extra 23,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide to the district, and casue vibration, nouse an dlight pollution for the many residents who live near it.
We also raised money by fun events, which were enjoyed by everyone in the community. We enjoyed garden parties, roller discos, sponsored bike rides and a sponsored guided walk across the dramatic Morecambe Bay. We formed a “human road”, to show just how ghastly the road would be.
At the Inquiry, the Inspector agreed that the road would cause severe damage to the area, but still granted planning permission.
Since then, we have commissioned an expert report on the transport economics of the scheme; we have visited the Department of Transport to argue against it, and we continue to campaign against it.
The scheme still has many hurdles to clear. Compulsory Purchase Orders are expected soon, which could well lead to another Inquiry. There are several more stages to go through to receive Government funding, which is by no means assured when all the pressure is for cuts in Government spending.
Best wishes,
